Cordes sur Ciel and the Gardens of Paradise

"The traveller who looks at the summer night from the terrace at Cordes knows that if he wishes it, the beauty of this place, day after day, will banish solitude"  Albert Camus 1954

This half day or full day excursion is a fascinating step back in history and where you can experience the grandeur and architecture of this true bastide town.

Long before it became part of France, Cordes received its charter as a Bastide from Raimond VII, the Count of Toulouse in 1222. Its name is thought to be a derivative of the word "corte" meaning "rocky heights" and as names go it is certainly appropriate because on many days, Cordes sits above the clouds that blanket the Cérou valley below.

This exceptional medieval bastide city with its ancient heritage and historic architecture is one of the most significant in France. It is a perfect trip for a morning or afternoon or can be combined with a visit to the fabulous "Gardens of Paradise"

You can stroll to the top of this living fortress or take the navette...the minibus to the top to see the spectacular views. It is an incredible sight that has been the inspiration for numerous artists and, in this modern era, photographers

If you are taking the full day excursion about midday our thoughts turn to food, at this point you have the option of a snack or a five course meal in one of the numerous cafés or restaurants in Cordes or a short drive out into the Gaillac hills for a picnic overlooking the majestic scenery of Cordes sur Ciel.

Lunch over you can stroll through the beautiful luxurious flora and fauna of Le Jardin des Paradis, a remarkable garden of oriental inspiration. Carpets of flowers, banana grove, kitchen garden and pools awaken all your senses.

The museum in the garden hosts an exhibition on beautiful and unusual seeds from the four corners of the earth. Try to find the mystery perfume on the "scented trail" or relax in the Persian pavilion where you can relax in a hammock and soak up the atmosphere..a foretaste of paradise

The gardens are open each year from late April through to early October
